Navy trounce Colombo Bulls

Navy cagers tamed the Colombo Bulls team (83-53) in their Carlton Cup
division ‘A’ match played at the Police Depot yesterday. Sailors were
five points ahead at the end of the first quarter (19-14) increased the
lead to 14 points at the half time stage (41-27). Even though Bulls had
the advantage of hight sailors did not allow them to prosper on it.
Losers fought hard and reduced the gap during the second quarter (23-21)
but soon sailors widen the gap with two consecutive three point shots
and eased the tension.
Sailors blocked the Bulls’ attack with afull court man to man defense
and grabbed back to back points in the third and final quarters to win
the match with a commendable 30 point lead in the end.T. Mithushan and
C. Vijay scored 23 and 22 points respectively for the winners while A.
Perera (10 points) and A. Vishvanath (9 points) were the best scorers
for the losers.Jaffna Basketball Club team went down to Carlton ‘B’ team
(73-45) in their first appearance in a Carlton Cup division ‘B’ match at
the same venue. The half time scores were 39-20 in favor of Carlton BC.
Jaffna team scored 17 points against 18 from the winners in the third
quarter but were lagging behind 20 points in the end (57-37).
Winners comfortably increased the gap in the final quarter to win the
match with a 28 point lead in the end.D.Perera scored 14 points while T.
Perera and H. Wijesuriya added 12 points each for the winners. R.
Prashanthen and S. Vishvaharan added 12 and 10 points respectively for
the losers. |
