Concrete slab falls, passer-by dies

One person was killed and six vehicles damaged, when part of a concrete slab on the People’s Bank’s 15th floor gave way and crashed to the ground yesterday noon.

An injured person succumbed to injuries a few hours after he was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. The victim, a resident of Galle, was walking along the road when the mishap occurred. Two vehicles belonging to the Inland Revenue Department and four private vehicles were damaged as a result.

It also caused a huge traffic jam.

According to sources the building of the People’s Bank head office had been constructed in 1970s by the State Engineering Corporation. It was renovated in 2011 to mark the Bank’s 50th anniversary.
