Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa participated
in a ceremony to hand over 109 houses at Menik Farm Village
in Vavuniya district Wednesday. The Housing Project funded
by the European Union will complete 2,500 houses in the
Vavuniya district by 2013. The project is being implemented
by Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland (ASB). Here Minister
Rajapaksa with European ambassador to Sri Lanka Bernard
Savage. The Menik Farm Housing Project is carried out with
the guidance of the Economic Development Ministry, Northern
Spring programme, Presidential Task Force for Resettlement,
Development and Security of Northern Province and District

Gusty winds damage houses

Gusty winds that blew across Gaminipura village in the Polonnaruwa
district damaged 20 houses yesterday evening.
According to a spokesman of the Disaster Management Centre, trees
have been uprooted and fallen on several houses. He said roofs of many
houses have been blown off. Three houses were severely damaged, he said.
Help save his life
T Lal Gunathilake of No 22, Littlten Watte, Waskaduwa is suffering
from triple vessel disease in coronary arteries. Dr Sandeep Shrivastava
Cardiothoracic Surgeon & Head CTVS of Nawaloka Hospital Colombo has
recommended an urgent Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery which will
cost Rs 490,000 to save his life.
Gunatilleke is a father of three, and unemployed and cannot foot the
bill. He seeks public assistance to expedite his surgery. Contributions

Education seminar
A Japanese education seminar organized by the Japanese Embassy
together with the Japanese Graduates Alumni Association of Sri Lanka (JAGAAS),
and the Japan International Cooperation Centre (JICE) will be held on
September 10 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium at 10.00
am.
Needs help for surgery
Donald Chandana Dasa of Dikowita, Wattala is suffering from acute
renal failure and has been recommended an urgent kidney transplant by
Consultant Nephrologist Dr Ruchira Lanerolle. The surgery is estimated
to cost approximately Rs 600,000.
Donald says that he is not in a position to find money for the
surgery and requests public and philanthropists to assist him by sending
donations to A\c number 222-2-002-1-0003303 of People's Bank, Wattala
Branch.
Former IGP Cyril Herath no more
Cyril
Herath who served as the Inspector General of Police from 1985 to 1988
passed away yesterday after a brief illness.
He was a graduate of the University of Peradeniya having studied
Economics, History and Philosophy and is an old boy of St. John's
College, Nugegoda and Royal College, Colombo.
The funeral will take place at the General Cemetery, Borella tomorrow
at 6.00pm after ceremonial proceedings at 5.00pm. Cortege leaves
residence at No. 64, Old Kesbewa Road, Nugegoda at 4.00pm.
Cash and jewellery stolen from avasaya

The avasaya of Polgampola Seelananda Devagiri Viharaya was burgled
and jewellery worth Rs 680,000, money and other items stolen.
The money and the other items were donated to the temple's devalaya
by devotees, police said.
Investigations are continuing.
Poster launch
A poster depicting the solar system titled 'Our Solar System'
published by Astronomer Anura C Perera will be available in all three
languages at the book exhibition at the BMICH, Colombo from September 17
to 25.
Discourse on Che Guevara and future of socialism
A discourse on Che Guevara and the future of socialism will be held
on September 13 at 4 pm at the National Library and Documentation
Services Board, Nidahas Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Dr Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri of the University of Colombo and Pubudu
Jayagoda will initiate the discourse.
A collection of essays titled Samajawadaya saha Minisa Saha Wenath
Rachana written by Che Guevara and translated by Jayatilleke de Silva
will also be launched at this event.
Onam festival today
The Malayalie community living in Sri Lanka will celebrate the Onam
festival today. Sree Narayana Guru Society of Sri Lanka President M K
Rahulan in his Onam festival greetings has said that this is a very
significant festival celebrated by the Malayalies living all over the
world.
The 157th birth anniversary of Sri Narayana Guru will be held at the
Sri Narayana Guru Malayalie hall at Layard's Broadway, Colombo-14.
Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kantha will grace this occasion as
chief guest.
Discussion on Rajagaha
A radio discussion on Rajagaha (the city of Rajagaha - India) will be
broadcast over the Sinhala National Service of the SLBC at 11.30 am on
September 11.
Dr Harischandra Wijetunge and Dr Premadas Sri Alawattage will
participate in this discussion. The programme will be conducted by
Sirisaman Wijetunga. The programme is produced by Upali Marasinghe.
Dhamma school anniversary
The 10th anniversary of Siriwimalasiri English Dhamma School of
Asokaramaya, Polpithimukalana will be held tomorrow at 2 pm.
The guests of honour will be Secretary to the President Lalith
Weeratunga, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and National Youth
Services Council Chairman and Director General Lalith Piyum Perera.
Writers' guild
A national level writers' guild will be formed on September 10 at 10
am at the National Museum Auditorium Colombo 7.
Cultural Affairs Minister T B Ekanayake and Education Minister
Bandula Gunawardena will be the chief guests.
The organisers had invited Sinhala, Tamil and English medium writers
for the inaugural ceremony.
Frauds and malpractices on AG's website

The Auditor General's Department plans to publish in a website the
Audit Report relevant to frauds and malpractices in various departments
and other state institutions as conducted and checked by the Auditor
General's Department.
The AG's Department has taken action to introduce a new website for
this purpose and preliminary work in that regard has already commenced.
The Auditor General H A S Samaraweera, disclosed the new programme at
a function held in Kandy yesterday (8).
The AG said this programme would make it easy to any person to
receive information concerning any fraud or malpractice in any state
institution which had been detected by the department.
Sarath Wimalasiri on Sharddhanjalee
The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation will present well-known lyric composer and poet W K Sarath
Wimalasiri over the Shraddhanjalee Programme from noon to 12.45 pm on
September 11.
He makes an analytical presentation of the songs composed, based on
various themes that come in Buddhist literature.
He will also present his views on lyrics, singing and music on topics
under discussion. This programme is produced by Visharada Rohana
Dharmakeerthi and presented by Dilka Handuwala.
Nikini perahera
Trincomalee, Seruwila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara annual Nikini Perahera
will parade the streets on September 11.
The perahera is held to pay homage to the Lalata relics of the
Buddha.
Trusteeship programme
The Training for Trusteeship Programme commenced for the fourth
consecutive year at the Kegalle Sanasa Education Campus on Sunday. It is
conducted by the Weeramantry International Center for Peace Education
and Research (WICPER).
The programmes will conclude on September 11. Seven South Asian
Countries and the United States participate
The aim of the programme is to train future leaders.
Awards ceremony
The Awards ceremony of the Literary Day will be held on September 30
at Maho Vijayaba Central School under the patronage of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa.
The President will open a drama theatre at the school.
One shot dead

Mudiyanselage Gamini Karunaratna, 31, a father of two and accused in
a murder case of Dambalawana, Ratnapura was shot dead by an unidentified
person on August 29.
Cops to handle dogs

The Police Department will recruit 150 police officers to the
department as canine handlers.
They will be assigned to take care of the police dogs and train them.
Experience will be considered foremost for recruitment.
The Police Department said that they will import 100 dogs for its
services.
Lionel Ranaweera dies
Kalasoori Lionel Ranaweera, former Art consultant of the Ananda
College, Colombo died yesterday. He was 69 and ailing for sometime at
the Colombo National Hospital.
Lionel Ranaweera made a great contribution to the promotion of
children’s arts and made a great contribution by giving guidance to a
number of children in Various Art competitions.
The Lionel Ranaweera Foundation made it possible for thousands of
schoolchildren to improve their talents. He rendered more than half of
his life to promote arts.
The remains of Lionel Ranaweera die at his residence at No. 498/12,
Jayagath Mawatha, 4th Lane, Hokandara North and the funeral will be held
tomorrow (10) at 4.30 p.m at the Thalahena public cemetery.
Port workers’ insurance under National Insurance Fund
The health insurance of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority workers has
been entrusted to the National Insurance Fund under President Mahinda
Rajapaksa’s advice.
Accordingly the insurance scheme for the port workers will be
operating to cover over 13,000 employees in the port enabling them to
have numerous insurance benefits.
Fund Chairman Senaka Abeygunasekera said that the President had
instructed him to bring all the port workers into a systematic insurance
scheme as they were facing many risks in their jobs in the port.
Ports Authority Chairman Dr. Priyath Banduwickrama has expressed his
gratitude of thanks to the President as the Chairman of the Insurance
Fund for the action taken for the welfare of port workers.
