Million to benefit from Kelani right bank project

The Kelani right bank water treatment plant project which is now nearing completion will benefit nearly one million people in Gampaha and Colombo districts, said Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardene.

He said the project built at a cost of Rs 81,000 million will directly benefit people in Kelaniya, Ja-Ela, Ekala, Mahara, Wattala, Biyagama, Kiribathgoda, Kadawatha, Ragama, Kandana, Seeduwa, Welisara, Ganemulla and Negombo areas, who are now provided water from projects fed by the Ambatale reservoir. The water discharged from Ambatale will then be served to augment supplies to Colombo and suburbs which also depend on Ambatale for its water supplies.

The new treatment plant has a daily capacity of 180,000 cubic metres. The ground reservoir has a capacity of 360,000 cubic metres.
