Private universities should be of high standard

If private universities are to open in Sri Lanka they should be of the highest standards, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said.

Addressing a ceremony at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital yesterday Minister Sirisena pointed out that Sri Lankan doctors are ranked number one in the world and they are qualified and capable of treating any patients from anywhere in the world.

According to the minister Sri Lankan state universities produce top class doctors with highest standards and the doctors serving at state hospitals had passed out from state universities with highest qualifications.

A doctor with highest standards can serve anywhere in the world. Doctors cannot be produced instantly like `Thosai' or `Betel' bundles.

Therefore if there are private Medical schools in the country, they should have the highest standards, the minister added.
