Appearing in a strange guise with strange ideas Colombo artists have
already carved a niche in the field of visual arts. Focusing not on the
economic gains but to quench their thirst of giving vent to aesthetic
emotions Colombo artists hold exhibitions every year.
Chaminda Gamage’s paintings will be showcased in such an exhibition.
The exhibition will be held at Barefoot Gallery, Colombo 3, from
September 8 to October 2.
“I belong to a simple art organisation. We do our own solo works. I
will be displaying solo paintings I’ve done in the past two years. We
formed ‘Colombo Artists’ to focus on a collective attempt. As artists we
should do our solo and exhibit them individually.”
His paintings relate to conceptual drawings. Black and white are my
themes. These colours are of two extremes and can be defined in numerous
ways.
“Someone can say the black I employ speaks for the highly
commercialised society or evil, while white stands for the traditional
self-sufficient society which is too neutral. So these two divisional
colours have encouraged me to show different views.”
Chaminda Gamage and the Colombo Artists are of the opinion that the
traditional society is good but the materialistic modern society cannot
be averted since we are tied tight to it. Both societies carry some
importance.
“We display paintings according to such concepts. But the viewer can
see the work and can define it in a different manner. That’s what should
happen. The discourse is important and it brings us to the feedback
which in turn encourages us.”
