Hope is a candle in the night
Hope is a long respite
Hope is a feather

Elegy - The slain PC of Puttalam

Navaratne Bandara is his name
Though not a man of great fame
It's the irony of his cruel fate
That his tragic death has made him great.

The inhuman way he was slain
Has shaken the psyche of the Puttalam town
Making all the Puttalam men and women
Mourn for their fellow countryman.

It was the third part of the Muslim fasting
When we heard the tragedy of his killing.
For all people, pious and peace - loving
It was a shock too traumatising.

A simple soul with child-like innocence
Had fallen a prey to brutal mob violence.
The vultures had attacked with meaningless vengeance
Paying no heed to the dangerous consequences
Savage brutality did stop his breathing
And our sad hearts are still, still bleeding.

Homage to him did people pay
In many, many a way -
Shops in the town were all closed
And prayers special were held
Cancelled were all festival celebrations
In contemplation is a compensation.

May his soul rest in peace
Our solemn prayer for its eternal solace.

Meanwhile, the city was saved
As saner counsel prevailed.

Noble indeed were the State security men
Who performed their duties with professional acumen

Merciless dealings

With his basket,
Waited until his customers came
With a practised hand
Took fish one by one
”Still living, struggling for life”
Merciless dealings!

Loaded the balance
And declared “Three hundred”
Then bargainings begun
For his merciless dealings!

Customers departed,
Empty bucket
Plenty pocket
Bargainings over
But those merciless dealings continued;
With two more baskets the next day.

Mellifluous life

There’s no folly in accepting life as it is,
Being in world we mingle, then we part,
The journey’s not an end, but a start,
Along another path, of a vast range.

Once a door’s closed, many doors open,
meant for us, to explore and walk through,
Surely no clues for the journey, be brave,
The only weapon to safety is faith in God.

In this journey, we stroll, run, stumble, fall,
Truly we face difficulties, barriers many,
use heaven given talents human abilities,
Let us be the winners of the rugged path.

Dear one, don’t moan grumble, complain,
Courageously face, taste this bitter chalice.
Go on fumble, be humble, seek happiness,
None owe happiness, it’s always borrowed.

Stand up smile, reject defeat, when fallen,
Sigh in sorrow, yet never ever cry, lament,
Never welcome bitterness, yet try and try,
To keep your head up, not swollen in pride.

Dear pal, life is a complicated, long journey,
What a large display of mellifluous life,
Morrow will be better,” Ever fine tomorrow”
‘Hope’ strengthens you to face today.

The rainbow

A rainbow I saw
Across the rain-sodden dark sky,
A mesmerizing beauty of few minutes,
In unity in diversity.

Inevitable

The light is switched on,
the darkness starts to set in,
starts to diminish the light of the day,
and starts to take over therein.
No matter how perfect a day turns out,
with all the ecstasy and raptures we face
or the depths of the enjoyment and joy
the day grants,
there’s nothing we can do,
to avoid,
its demise;
it’s all momentary,
it’s all powerless.
Nothing can stop,
the darkness from engulfing
and stealing the life
of a beautiful and joyous day.
Regardless of how much you want
a special moment to last,
its death is inevitable.
The circumstances don’t matter,
the end is always round the corner;
inflexibly unavoidable.
