The premiere of the Sinhala film Susima directed by Rohan
Welivita was held at the ‘Tharanganee’ Cinema hall of the
National Film Corporation under the patronage of First Lady
Shiranthi Rajapaksa recently. Here, the First Lady being

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr.
Rajitha Senaratne was awarded the honorary doctorate for
Political Science from the International University of
Preliminary Studies, St Petersburg, Russia.He is the first
Sri Lankan to receive a doctorate from this university on
Political Science. Minister Senaratne also received an upper
class Alexander Suvorov honorary award, and Heart of Danko
certificate from Moscow and St.Peters Public Organization. |
Training programme
Nethali STRUYS
A training programme was launched for 350 people engaged in the
construction sector in the Anuradhapura district under the patronage of
Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities
Minister Wimal Weerawansa.
The participants will receive a comprehensive training from experts
in the construction field.
An internationally recognized certificate and an identity card will
also be awarded on the successful completion of the training.
September Song at Lionel Wendt
Menaka Singers Opera Ensemble will present September Song directed by
Menaka de Fonseka Sahabandu at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on September 6
and 7 at 7.30pm.
A unique feature will be the participation of the Junior Menaka
Singers in a segment of the opera Carmen.
Soloists are Dhanushi Wijeyakulasooriya, Laknath Seneviratne, Trudy
Herft, Dmitri Gunetileke, Jaliya Senanayake, Gehan Cooray, Rachel
Halliday, Anuk Munesinghe, Dushyanth Aluwihare and Anagi Perera. The
direction of the operas will be handled by Gehan Cooray and Dmitri
Gunetilleke under the supervision of Jith Pieris.
Instrumental music will be handled by Menaka de Fonseka Sahabandu
(piano), Tamara Holsinger (cello), Naveen Fernando (trumpet) and
Dilrukshi Perera (flute).
The Concert is sponsored by the Earle de Fonseka Trust and the
proceeds will be towards the Professorial Paediatric Unit of the Lady
Ridgeway Children's Hospital, Colombo.
Book launch
Advocate, journalist and former Parliamentarian Buddhika
Kurukularatne will launch his seventh book on September 7 at 3.00 p.m.
at the Mahaweli Centre Auditorium.
The book is a collection of articles that the author had contributed
to the Sunday Island, some years back and contains little known
interesting facts about 17 prominent Lankans.
Former Secretary General of Parliament and ex-Parliamentary
Commissioner for Administration (Ombudsman) Sam Wijesinha will preside.
The panellists will be Secretary to seven Prime Ministers Bradmon
Weerakoon, Editor-in-Chief of the Sunday Island Manik de Silva and film
personality Ravindra Randeniya.
The function is open to the public.
Assistance for housing

The Economic Development Ministry will grant financial assistance to
those who are living at shanty dwellings in 12 divisional secretariat
areas in the Matara District to construct houses.
A family will receive Rs 100,000 through the Divisional Secretariat.
Work on the construction of five houses is being implemented.
More sailors pass out
Seven hundred and twenty two recruits belonging to the 204th and
205th Intakes of Navy passed out in a passing out parade held at SLNS
Shiksha in Punewa recently.
Naval Volunteer Force Commander Rear Admiral Susith Weerasekara was
the chief guest. North Naval Area Commander Rear Admiral AR Amarasinghe,
other senior Naval officers and family members of the sailors attended
the event.
The 204th Intake which comprised 365 recruits, was trained at SLNS
Parakumba in Sampoor while the 205 intake which comprised 357 recruits,
was trained at SLNS Shiksha in Punewa.
One dies in collision
One person died and three others including the driver were injured
and admitted to the Embilipitiya hospital when a three-wheeler they were
travelling in collided with a private bus at Embilipitiya on the
Pelmadulla road wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Don Seetha Mahanama, 39, of Koholana,
Walasmulla.
Indonesian cultural festival
An Indonesian Cultural Festival will be held at Hotel de Galle, in
Galle on September 8 at 5 pm. It has been organized by Indonesian
Ambassador Djfar Husein in response to a request made by Southern
Province Governor Kumari Balasuriya.
Nearly 45 Indonesian artistes will feature in this festival.
Concurrent to this, a group of Indonesian batik artistes will conduct
two batik workshops for Batik artistes in the Southern Province at the
same venue on the same day from 12 noon to 2 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm.
PS coffers thrive during Esala fair

The Devinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha has earned a record total income of
Rs 12.7 million from the Esala Fair conducted concurrent to the Esala
Perahera of the Devinuwara Upulvan Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya, said
Pradesheeya Sabha chairman Sujeewa Wedage.
He said after donating Rs 4 million to the Sri Vishnu Devalaya for
its development activities and meeting all other sundry expenditure, the
Pradeshiya Sabha earned a net profit of Rs 2.5 million.
The chairman disclosed this tabling a statement of accounts at the
monthly meeting of the Pradesheeya Sabha on Tuesday.
First Media Training College

The first media training college of the government will be
established at Kadawatha, affiliated to the Vocational Training
Authority, Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas
Alahapperuma said.
He said a journalist, Udeni Galahitiyawa consented to donate land at
Kadawatha to set up the training college.
Robbery
Three armed bandits had broken into a house at Ketagalara,
Embilipitiya on Wednesday night and robbed cash and jewellery after
tying up the inmates and herding them into a room. They had shot and
injured the chief occupant of the house.
He succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the Embilipitiya
hospital. The deceased was identified as Vijayamunige Nandapala.
The body is lying at the Embilipitiya hospital morgue awaiting the
autopsy.
Naval troops attached to SLNS Pussadeva in the North Central
Naval Command recovered a stock of detonators in the general
area Udaiyadi in Mannar on August 31. The recovery was made
by a group of Naval personnel deployed on beach patrol.
Among the recovered items were eight detonators and non
electrical fuses believed to be used in illegal fishing. |
