KDAW goes for Rs 800m investment plan

A leading construction company specializing in road development, water supply and drainage, airport development (Air Field Construction) Projects KDAW and Company Ltd will invest Rs 800 million for their projects soon.

The company’s Managing Director engineer K.D.A. Weerasinghe told Daily News Business the company has done work worth of Rs 2.4 billion last year mainly in road construction work and realized the necessity to go for expansion to meet challenges of a booming industry in the coming year. Therefore, it has spent over Rs 1 billion up to now.

Weerasinghe said the company could foresee a huge opportunity in the road construction sector by looking at the Government’s development plan and plans to develop infrastructure.

The company enhanced its capability by installing four new asphalt mixing plants with the capacity of 80 tonnes per hour each, four new crusher plants of 200 tonnes per hour each in Ambalangoda, Naboda, Medawachchiya and Polonnaruwa to meet the increasing demand.

Weerasinghe said KDAW’s newly installed asphalt mixing plant is the most advanced and environment friendly plant installed in Sri Lanka recently in addition to fleet of 80 new dump trucks and other machinery.

The company has employed over 1,600 people including 38 engineers islandwide. The shortage of manpower and skilled labour is a huge challenge and he hoped the Government will be able to fill this gap through NVQ and other training.

KDAW has completed a number of Road Development Projects in the North, East, North Central, Southern, Western Provinces and they were awarded the sub-contract for Southern Highway Construction Project by Taisei Corporation - Japan for ABC Overlaying and Asphalt Laying of part of the highway.

Weerasinghe is looking at the overseas market for future expansion and has already diversified to the education sector locally.

The company has proved its mettle by attending to emergency repairs of the Katunayake airport after the LTTE attack in 2002.

The winner of a merit award in the large scale service sector at the CNCI awards recently Weerasinghe is looking at the export market.
