SL Railways earn Rs 918,160 in fines

Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) earned Rs 918,160 in fines from 1010 ticketless travellers during the period from July 1 to 31.

The fines were imposed on long distance and suburban train travellers. A Sri Lanka Railways Railway Protection Force (RPF) Spokesman said teams comprising 40 officers conducted raids on the Sagarika train, Samudradevi train,Udaya Kumari train, Ruhunu Kumari train, train no.39 operating from Matara to Kandy and train no.35 operating from Colombo Fort to Kandy covering all railway stations between these two destinations day and night. Moratuwa, Panadura, Kalutara, Bambalapitiya, Kollupitiya, Wadduwa, Dematagoda, Wanawasala, Gampaha, Weyangoda, Meerigama and Polgahawela were the sections where a large number of ticketless travellers were detected," he said.

The offences included travelling without tickets, travelling in second class using a third class ticket, travelling beyond the destination mentioned in the ticket, trading and begging.

"Checks are conducted on trains and on the platforms."he said. "Special checks will also be conducted in addition to routine checks that are carried out during the rush hour," he said.
