Nachchikuda naval detachment opens

The largest naval detachment established after completing the humanitarian mission was opened by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday at Nachchikuda.

The Nachchikuda detachment has been established close to Nachchikuda beach on a 752 acre land.

Addressing the media Navy Commander Vice Admiral D W A S Dissanayake said that the Navy would be developing the Nachchikuda detachment as a cantonment. Accordingly the North Central Naval Command which is now being operated in Mannar will be shifted to Nachchikuda detachment in the near future.

He further said that it has been planned to establish more Navy camps along the coast line of the country aiming to strengthen the country's security while reducing illegal activities such as smuggling.

He said that Nachchikuda is noted for human and drug smuggling and illegal fishing using explosives. Besides Nachchikuda was considered as the women Sea Tiger base through which firearm smuggling was carried out by LTTE terrorists.

The Naval detachments which are to be established will reduce illegal activities.
