Fake Rs 5,000 notes for jewellery

A man who tried to purchase jewellery after producing 43 counterfiet notes in the Rs 5,000 denomination was arrested by Eppawala Police.

Eppawala police said that two persons had come to Jemali Jewellers in Thalawa Road, Eppawala on Wednesday evening and one of them purchased four necklaces and four earrings giving 43 notes in the Rs 5000 denomination. The cashier being suspicious of the notes had requested the identity card of the buyer who then fled.

The shop keeper with the help of neighbours who gave chase caught one person but the other suspect on the motorbike managed to escape.

The suspect, a resident of Mahakachchikodiya was handed over to Eppawala police where they seized another 45 fake Rs 5000 notes.

Eppawala police handed over the suspect to the CID for further investigations.
