Businessman's house burgled

The house of a businessman at Madupitiya, Panadura was burgled and jewellery valued at Rs 150,000 and cash were stolen. Investigations revealed that the businessman's ex-driver had burgled the house while the family members were away.


Police seize illegal gem mining equipment

Ingiriya police team raided an illegal gem mining location in Kalu Ganga at Nambapana area and seized a stock of gem mining equipment. The raid was carried out on a tip-off.

The suspects managed to escape from the police during the raid. Police are investigating to arrest these suspects.


Essay, art, poster competition

An essay, art and poster competition has been organized by the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) to mark the World Habitat Day 2011.

Entries for the competition are now being accepted. The competition will be held under three groups; grade 1 to 5, grade 5 to 10 and grade 11 to 13. Schoolchildren of all age groups can take part in the art competition.

The essay competition will be held for the other two groups; grade 6 to 10 and grade 11 to 13. The poster competition will be conducted only for the grade 11 to grade 13 group.

First place winners will receive Rs 10,000 each. The second prize is Rs 7,500 and third prize is Rs 5,000. Winners will also receive certificates and awards. Five consolation prizes worth Rs 2,000 each will also be awarded.

The World Habitat Day 2011 competition will be held under the theme, Settlement and Climate Changes. The closing date of entries for this competition will be on September 9. More details can be obtained from all NHDA District Offices and Deputy General Manager (Information and Publicity) of NHDA, Sir Chittampalam, Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 2, by sending a stamped envelope to the above address.


Aloka pooja

A Maha Adhisthana Aloka Pooja to invoke blessings on the people conducted by Ven. Kaluwamodara Seelathilakatissa Thera, Deputy Principal, Kaluwamodara Government school will be held at the Lenawara Raja Maha Viharaya, Haltota on August 31 at 6 pm.


Kadhafi compound captured -AFP

Rebel fighters captured Moamer Kadhafi’s heavily defended Bab al-Aziziya compound and headquarters in Tripoli on Tuesday after a day of heavy fighting, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

The defenders had fled, and there was no immediate word on the whereabouts of Kadhafi or his family after the insurgents breached the defences as part of a massive assault that began in the morning. AFP


Lecture

The Royal Asiatic Society Sri Lanka (RASSL) has organized a lecture titled "Towards Compiling a History of Sri Lankan Philosophy" by Prof Y Karunadasa, Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies, University of Hong Kong on August 29 at 5 pm at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 07. All are welcome.


Sirith Maldama presentation

A ceremony to distribute a Compact Disk containing Sirith Maldama will be held on August 29 at 10 am at the Prime Minister's Office.

The disc will be first presented to Prime Minister DM Jayaratna by the Prime Minister's Secretary Ms Amarasekara. It will be then presented to Education Minister Bandula Gunawardana.


Icons of Success

The Class of 86' of the D S Senanayake College Old Boys' Association will celebrate its silver jubilee on September 3 evening at Waters Edge, Sri Jayawardenapura on the theme 'Icons of Success'.

The agenda of the evening's event will start with a remembrance of the brothers who laid down their lives in defence of the motherland, an appreciation of the teachers of the batch who moulded the "Icons of Success", followed with activities to make the event a meaningful milestone in the history of D S Senanayake College - Class of 86'.

The highlight of the event is re-union with past teachers who taught the 1986 Group of DS Senanayake College from 1974-1986.

The Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka has organized a seminar on "Citizens' Right to Information" to be held on August 24, 2011 at 6 pm at the Auditorium of the OPA, No 275/75, Prof Stanley Wijesundera Mw, Colombo 7.


"Yosakoi dance"

The Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the University of Peradeniya will present a Japanese "Yosakoi dance" on Thursday August 25, 2011 at the E O E Pereira Theatre, University of Peradeniya, (Faculty of Engineering) at 6 pm followed by another performance in Colombo on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the New Town Hall auditorium (next to Mahaweli Centre) at 6 pm.

The "Yosakoi dance" will feature "Hokuto-gumi", which is an elite unit of Team Yamabiko, a Yosakoi dancing team which mainly performs at Kobe, Japan. 'Yosakoi' (which means "Come at night") is a unique style of dance which originated in Japan in the city of Kochi in 1954, as a modern rendition of Awa Odori, a traditional summer dance.
