Second language ability a must

The government will make the second language proficiency compulsory to all public sector employees, said National Languages and Social Integration Ministry Media Secretary Mahendra Harischandra.

National Languages and Social Integration Ministry announced that the employees who joined the public service from July 1st 2007 should obtain the proficiency certificate for the second language before the end of 2012.

The Official Languages Department in collaboration with the Examinations Department will conduct examinations regarding language proficiency.

Public sector employees who fail to qualify in the second language proficiency test will be subjected to the suspension of salary increments the ministry announced.
