A simple ceremony was held at the
Parliament complex to receive Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa who
was elected President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary
Association. The ceremony was organised by Secretary General
of Parliament Dhammika Kithulgoda and Parliament staff. He
was received by Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika
Kithulgoda and Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody on his
arrival at the Parliament complex. The members of Parliament
staff greeted the Speaker while he was being conducted to
the library. He was blessed by members of the Maha Sangha
led by Ven Thalagala Wimala Thera, Ven Okadayaye Buddhasiri
Thera and Ven Kalutara Wanarathana Thera by chanting seth

In the not too distant past it was the
boom of guns and bombs that was a daily feature of their
lives and only terrorist trucks monopolized this road.
Today, however, not only Tamils but other communities too
are able to travel on these roads without fear. What is this
devotee praying for before the statue of a Hindu deity on
the main Jaffna highway? Is it not his plea that he would
never have to hear those frightening sounds ever again?

Nearly 8,000 drams of illicit brew seized
Priyadarshani KAHAWALA-Ingiriya Central Group
A large stock of illicit brew was seized during a raid in
Arakawila-Dullahara area by the Ingiriya Police.
The 7,920 drams of stock was located at a shrub jungles of the
Giranchi Kanda.
The suspects had escaped arrest. Police are conducting further
investigations to arrest them.
Wanted man caught

A man wanted by the police for over an year was taken into custody by
the Ingiriya police recently. The suspect was a resident of Urugala
area. The Ingiriya police is conducting inquiries on the instructions of
OIC, I M A Udaya Kumara.

Prof Hettiaratchi felicitated
Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and
former Sri Lankan Ambassador in Paris Professor S B Hettiaratchi will be
felicitated in South Korea today by awarding the Manhae Prize for
Practice by the Manhae Foundation of Korea. The Manhae Foundation has
been established in Seoul in commemoration of a Buddhist Monk named
Manhae.
Professor Hettiaratchi has been selected for the award for his
practice in the field of history and archaeology for more than 45 years
and also taking into consideration his contribution to develop this
field of study in Korea.
Hindustani vocal music recital
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo is organizing a Hindustani vocal
concert of Sanjaya Hemal Wahalathanthri at its Auditorium. He will be
accompanied on Tabla by Visharad B Isuru Tharaka Perera, on Violin by P
A Amila Madhusanka and on Harmonium by Visharad Nalin Ginendra Alwis.
The concert will be at 6.00 pm on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Indian

E Diploma
The Inauguration of the E Diploma in Human Rights for the second
batch of students will be held on August 11 at 9.30 a.m. at the Faculty
of Law, University of Colombo, followed by an orientation at the Nodes
