A fire that broke out in an estate at Dayagama in Nuwara Eliya gutted nine houses.

The Nuwara-Eliya district Disaster Management Centre said that 40 people who were residents of Dayagama estate 5th division have been displaced due to the incident and they are currently housed at the Dayagama East Tamil School while some have found shelter with their relatives.

The reason for the fire is still unknown . The Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat has supplied the displaced with cooked food.

Blankets, bed sheets and kitchen utensils have been distributed by the DMC and they are working with the Red Cross, World Vision and Human Plantation Development Project to provide more relief.

The Divisional and District Secretariats will take initiatives to rebuild the destroyed houses, the DMC sources said.
