Yoshitha and Namal star in Navy’s win over Kandy SC
The Sri Lanka Navy came up with a stupendous performance to score a
superb 29 points (one goal, two tries, four penalties) to 25 (one goal,
three tries, one penalty) win over defending champions Kandy Sports Club
at Welisara on Saturday after leading 18-8 at the breather.
It was Navy’s power-packed forwards who paved the way for this
victory. skipper Yoshitha Rajapaksa was a source of inspiration to his
team-mates with his fiery loose play and stood out in both attack and
defence along with his brother Namal Rajapaksa who scored a splendid
try.
They were ably supported by Bilal Hassan, Sumedha Malewana, Danushka
Perera, Kalana Amarasinghe, Sathya Ranatunge and Piumal Manchanayake as
the Navy ‘eight’ reigned supreme.
Fly half Dev Anand was also in superb form with his deep kicks to
touch and accurate place kicking in which he fired across four penalties
and converted one try.
Although Kandy SC fought back in the second half to cross the sailors
goal line on three occasions the lads from Kandy were stalled in the
last few minutes by the resolute defence put up by Navy.
It was Navy’s third successive win over Kandy SC at Welisara having
emerged victorious by 11-10 (2009) and 12-11 (2010) and helped them to
climb to third position in the points table and stay in contention for
the Caltex ‘A’ Division League Title. |
