NWP wild elephants death toll 26

About 26 wild elephants in the North Western wildlife zone have died
of being shot and other reasons during the past seven months. A.M.
Somaweera, senior official attached to the North Western Wildlife Zone
of Ministry of wildlife told Daily News that about 37 wild elephants had
died during the same period last year.
He further said that all measures are now being taken to stop deaths
of wild elephants due to human involvement.

An aged woman, 70, who was travelling in the pillion of a motorcycle
fell down and was admitted to the hospital.
She had died on admission to hospital. She was a mother of five and a
resident of Kebithigollewa, Bandara Ulpathagama.
The Kebithigollewa police are conducting investigations.
Man dies in road mishap

A man died on admission to hospital following traffic accident at
Wennappuwa on July 27. He was knocked down by a private bus on the
Chilaw-Colombo road and was seriously injured. He was admitted to
Marawila hospitl where he succumbed to his injuries.
The person was identified as H A Don Newton Wijeratne, 70, a resident
of Wennapuwa.
Police investigations revealed that the person met with the accident
while crossing the road and he was rushed to the hospital with fatal
injuries.
Teenager dies in accident

A 14-year-old boy died in a road accident yesterday in front of the
Buttala-Pelwatta sugar factory, the Buttala Police said.
The victim, R.M. Rathnapriya, a student of Dutugamunu National School
in Buttala was killed when a truck knocked down the child.
The truck driver was taken into custody by the Buttala Police. The
body is in the Buttala National hospital for postmortem, the Police
said.
Parliamentary delegation leaves for India
A Parliamentary delegation headed by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa left
for India yesterday for a five-day visit on an invitation by Speaker of
the Indian Parliament, Srimathi Meera Kumari.
The objective of the tour is to ensure the inter-development between
the two Parliaments of Sri Lanka and India and getting the mutual
friendship consolidated between the two countries.
The Sri Lankan delegation headed by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa
comprises Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena, John Seneviratne, Rishad
Bathiuddin and Mutu Sivalingam and Parliamentarian Rajiva Wijesinghe, S.
Adekkalanadan, D.M. Swaminadan and Malini Fonseka. The Sri Lankan
delegates are also scheduled to pay courtesy calls on Indian President
Pratiba Devasingh Patel and Vice President C.M. Hameed and also meet
with officials of the Parliamentary Friendship Society.
English Day
The English Day of Tissa Central College, National School, Kalutara
will be held on August 3, 2011. The chief guest of the occasion will be
Kalutara Zonal Director of Education Padma Kannangara, while Divisional
Director of Education Nalini Abeysiriwardane will also grace the
occasion.
The event will showcase the talents of the students in the form of
dance, speech, drama and song and promises to be a colourful show aimed
at encouraging the use of English among the student population.
Death of Dinamina staffer's father
The death occurred of Gamini Sarathchandara Perera, former civil
engineer of the Sri Lanka State Engineering Corporation.
He is the husband of Padmalatha Perera and father of three, including
Samanmali Jayathunga, Sub Editor of the Dinamina Editorial. Funeral
takes place at the Bandaragama cemetery at 4 pm today. Remains are lying
at Delgaswatte Temple Road, Weedagama, Bandaragama. |
