ICLP conducts 15th anniversary award ceremony

The Institute for the Development of Commercial Law and Practice
(ICLP) conducted its 15th anniversary award ceremony at the BCIS
Auditorium at the BMIC yesterday.

The Chief Guest was President’s Counsel K Kanag-Isvaram. Guests of
Honour were Supreme Court Judge Justice Saleem Marsoof PC, Supreme Court
Judge P A Ratnayake, ICLP Secretary General S S Wijeratne, outgoing ICLP
Chairman Desamanya C P de Silva and ICLP Chairman U L Kadurugamuwa. ICLP
is a private sector supported institute, set up in 1992, for the purpose
of developing commercial law in Sri Lanka. The ICLP assisted the
Government of Sri Lanka to enact a modern arbitration law and
established an arbitration centre with the co-operation and financial
assistance of the Government of Sweden.
The Arbitration Centre of the ICLP being the only institutional
arbitration centre in Sri Lanka has proven to be an invaluable tool for
private sector companies in Sri Lanka for conflict resolution. The
rules, which govern the ICLP Arbitration Centre, are almost identical to
UNCITRAL Model Law and Rules of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce with
only minor amendments to conform to Sri Lanka Arbitration Act of 1995.
The centre deals with adhoc arbitrations and arbitrations in accordance
with ICLP Arbitration centre rules, catering to domestic and
international arbitrations.
Thirty five winners of the diploma in Commercial Arbitration received
their -Merit pass- awards from the Chief Guest and the other officials.
Eight students who followed the ICLP-CCC Certificate course on
Shipping Law and practice received Merits awards. Eleven received
ordinary pass awards.
Five received certificate of participation awards from the Guests of
Honour.
ICLP Chief Executive Officer Hemamali Amarasinghe conducted the
proceedings and Course Registrar Shaheema Fazly delivered the vote of
thanks.
