Chinese Language course

Applications are called for the Chinese Language Certificate Course jointly organized by the International Business Institute of Human Resource Advancement (IHRA) of the Colombo University and Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM).

The duration of the course is seven and half months and classes will be at weekends.

Applicants who wish to follow the course should be registered on or before July 29.

Budumedura at Info Department

Staff of the Information Department irrespective of religious differences joined to establish a Budumedura at the premises of the Information Department in a significant move at a time the nation is commemorating the 2600th Sri Sambuddatva Jayanthi, said Ven Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera.

The thera was addressing the unveiling ceremony of the Buddha statue at the Information Department Wednesday.

The Buddha statue which was placed at the newly opened Budumedura was unveiled by Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana.


Solid waste management

Solid Waste Management Projects have been planned for all 17 Local Government authorities in the Jaffna district, said Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

He was addressing a workshop to disseminate knowledge on solid waste management held last week at the Green Grass Hotel, Jaffna under the topic "Garbage Free Jaffna".

The minister pointed out that garbage can be a serious problem in the Jaffna district in the near future since it has entered an era of rapid development after 30 years of war. We need public participation to use these resources in an effective manner to create a garbage free Jaffna," he noted.


Health camp

A health camp organized by the Past Pupils' Association of Tissa Central College will be held at the essembly hall on July 23 from 8 am to 3 pm.

The health camp consists of the consultant services of Paediatric, Gynaecologic, ENT, Diabetic, Highpertension, Asthma, Gastritis, and of other illnesses.


Chariot festival

The chariot festival of Arul Mittu Siva Subramaniyam Temple, Slave Island, Colombo 2 will be held on July 25.

The chariot which is carved out of gold and laden with gold, studded with diamonds and rubies will be taken along Kew Street, Justice Akbar Mawatha, Malay Street and Kumaran Ratnam Street and finally reach the temple.

Board of Trustees president Thirukumar Nadesan and secretary Kandiah Neelakandan have made arrangements for the success of this chariot festival.


Lecture

Professor Ramachandra Guha will deliver a lecture on ‘Making South Asian Cities Habitable: A Perspective from the Past’ on July 31 at 6 pm at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium, 100, Independence Square, Colombo 7 to commemorate the 12th death anniversary of Dr Neelan Tiruchelvam.

It is organized by The Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust and The International Centre for Ethnic Studies.


Concert

Al Iman Schools, Early Learning Centre, Empowering Excellence in Education, 5D, Peter’s Lane, Dehiwela will conduct their inaugural concert on July 24 from 10 am to noon at SDS Jayasinghe Hall, Dehiwela. Bar Association President Shibly Aziz will be the chief guest.


Lecture

Colombo University Environmental Science Professor Sarath Kotagama will deliver a lecture on ‘Forests, Nature at our Service: A Historical Perspective’ on July 25 at 5 pm at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.


Pre-Ramazan Fair

The Group of ‘80 of Zahira College Colombo has organized a pre-Ramazan fair for the third successive year on July 30 from 3.30 pm and on July 31 from 10 am at the college premises.

The fair will include trade stalls on food, garments and other requisites for the Ramazan period.

It will also include cookery demonstrations, children’s play areas, amusement games and entertainment.

Bring and buy sale

Burhani Serendib School will hold a bring and buy sale of home needs, linen and groceries on July 22 from 9 am to 3 pm at the school premises.


Eye Camp project

Friends of Kalu Wandura in collaboration with Help Age Sri Lanka will conduct an eye camp for about 80 patients on July 23 at Susiriwardhanaramaya Temple in Kahahena, Waga. This is a community service project for the people of Waga to solicit their support to protect the Kalu Wandura, an endangered species found only in Sri Lanka.
