Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Sri Lanka Athletic Association President Major General Palitha Fernando said that there would be prominent and best athletes among the more than 1000 entries they had received which is nearly a doubled figure when compared to last year.

The increased number of entries than the last year is a positive sign of rising popularity in the event which in turn enhance the competitiveness while creating an environment to identify new talents, he said. He further stressed the importance of the championship as it will be the final touch to reach qualifying standards for the world championships.

The first day of the Women's Championship will commence at 8.00 am with 10000 meters final and 55 other events will wind up at 5.40 pm. Day two starts with 10,000 meters women's and under 20 girls race walk finals. There will be 45 track and field events on the second day and the closing ceremony will be around 4.30 pm.

The running numbers will be ready for collection on July 22, from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm at AASL headquarters at No 33, Torrington Avenue, Colombo 7.

AASL president also noted that the AASL headquarters will be moved to the BCC General Manager quarters at 281, Meeraniya Street, Colombo. AASL will temporally function there until a permanent location is set up.
