Magician's dilemma
Amalshan GUNERATHNE
Isn't real life a fascinating magic show where each tries to outshine
and outsmart the other? Fraud and trickery rule everywhere. Those who
excel at the art of deception and mischief survive. Each with a bag of
tricks tries to outthink the other, while those who are true to their
conscience suffer. Almost every -one of us have become victims of our
own deception. While raising these grave questions, Reginald Jayamanna's
latest teledrama 'Sanakelyai Maya' brings a very refreshing change to
the local tele-drama art. Two weeks in to running, the drama has been
received with positive responses from the viewers thus far.

The teledrama revolves around the life of a magician. He entertains
people with his magic tricks and excels at the art of magical deception.
However, ironically the very same person, who performs deceptive magic
tricks as a profession, finds himself in grave dilemma, as he fails to
cope with the bamboozling tricks that life throws at him. In real life
he is presented as a genuine and honest figure. Yet his humane qualities
work against him in real life, as he is deceived in to buying a wracked
car from one of his close mates.
Thus he begins to perceive the real life as a one big magic show,
where each tries to fool the other. The only difference of trickery in
real life being, the tricks in real life are performed with the
intention of harming or hurting the other, where as in a magic show the
trickery is being performed with the intention of entertaining the
audience.
The drama unravels around this fascinating storyline. While keeping
the entertainment factor alive through a fascinating storyline, the
drama also offers great wisdom to the viewer.
Speaking to the Artscope Reginald Jayamanna, the director of the
drama, noted, "The drama is not restricted to a one particular set of
viewers. I always look to cater to the popular stream while keeping the
artistic essence of the story intact."
Reginald also has these thoughts to share with us, when queried about
the grave dilemma of Indian Mega-teledramas he responded, "I studied
current trends in Sri Lankan television drama industry. For instance I
thought a lot about why people are drawn to Indian Mega Television
series. I guess, people love the fast moving nature of those storylines.
The Indian Mega Television Dramas comes with a really good looking,
attractive cast. They speak of people who live in fancy houses and
people who wear glamorous clothes. I guess subconsciously people always
dream of living such a life. They fantasize of living in such a grand
fashion.
Even the poorest person dream and long for a luxurious life. I guess
such tele-dramas give them a chance to live with that dream and be close
to that dream."
Reginald's latest drama Sanakeliyai Maya comes with a very popular
and esteemed cast. The main role of the drama is played by Palitha
Silva. The rest of the cast include Paboda Sandeepani, Bimal
Jayakodi,Chandani Seneviratne, Prathiba Hettiarchchi, Avanthi Aponsu,
Janak Premalal and Ajith Lokuge.
The music is composed by Navarathne Gamage. Comprised with forty one
episodes, the drama is being telecast on ITN at 9 pm during weekdays.
