Top guns at Gunner Super cross

The beautiful track beside the wild sanctuary of Minneriya once again
came alive when the thundering noise of power-filled engines added
thrill to the Gunner Supercross 2011 which concluded at the Sri Lanka
Artillery Regiment in Minneriya last week.

The defending champs, Young enthusiastic driver Pasindu Peiris and
indian champion rider C S Santhosh stole the limelight by winning the
championship events, the SL-GT Cars upto 3500 CC and the Group MX –
Motorcross Bikes Upto 125 CC (2T) and Upto 250CC (4T). They won the
titles Champion Driver and Rider at Gunner 2011.
Peiris hardly had any competition from other competitors competing in
his Mitsubishi Evolution IX. Santhosh, the defending champion who
dominated the tracks over the past two years, faced some stiff
opposition from Lankan super-star, Gayan Sandaruwan in the first of the
Group MX – Motorcross Bikes event. After leading the first two laps in
that event, disaster struck Gayan when he faced an accident and received
injuries to his toe. Thereafter his main opponent Santhosh took the lead
and left no room for errors and won both events.
Young and upcoming rider Shehan C Adhikari’s performances at the
Gunner are worth mentioning. The daredevil youngster was on the podium
on four occasions. He won the first of the Group MX – Motocross Bikes
event for riders under 16 years and was placed second in the next. In
the absence of Gayan Sandaruwan, Shehan fought for the third position in
the main motocross bikes event with Santhosh and other Indian rider K.P.
Aravind, giving the best in his 125 CC bike against the Indians who rode
machines with 250 CC engines.
The sixth Gunner Supercross was conducted by the Sri Lanka
Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDR) with Army Commander
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya gracing the occasion as chief
guest, accompanied by Seva Vanitha Army Branch President Manjulika
Jayasuriya.
