Robber caught returning from robbery

A suspect wanted in connection with 17 robberies was arrested by the Ingiriya police while returning after pawning the robbed jewllery from a house at Padukka.

He is alleged to have robbed 17 houses during the day when the owners were away and stole cash, jewellery and mobile phones.

Inquires revealed that he had entered the houses from the roof.

Police said he spends the money to buy ganja.


Residents call for action

The sanitary condition in the Veyangoda main fish market is deplorable, residents complain. The effluence of fish stalls empties to open drains and the stench emanating from these drains is a hazard to public health, residents say.

They urge authorities to take action.


Road development projects fast tracked in East

Construction and reconstruction work of several roads in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts commenced recently under the patronage of Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chanthirakanthan. The projects are funded by JICA. The projects aim for socio-economic development in the area.


Man with heroin gets jail, fine

Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Lanka Jayaratne, yesterday imposed a sentence of two months simple imprisonment and a Rs 7,500 fine on Mohamed Kitchil Tuan of Slave Island, who pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him for possession four milligrams of heroin.


Cop nabbed in bribery case

The Commission to investigate Bribery and Corruption arrested a policeman who attempted to take a gratification from a soldier.

The policeman attached to Mawathagama Police Station demanded a gratification of Rs 1,000 from a soldier who was nabbed riding a motorcycle without a licence. The suspect was to be produced before court yesterday.


Death of Soma Mallika Weerasuriya

The death occurred of Soma Mallika Weerasuriya of 198, Thalangama North Koswatta, Battaramulla.

Weerasuriya is the mother of four including ANCL Deputy Administrative Officer (Editorial) Priyanthi Pushpika and Deepa Chandani of Dinamina Computer Division. She is the mother-in-law of Udayashantha Jayalath attached to the Daily News Computer Section. The funeral will take place on July 18 at 5 pm at the Thalahena cemetery.


Poultry farming

The Agriculture Department has urged low income families in the Gampaha district to take to poultry farming with Economic Development Ministry assistance on the instructions of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Chicks will be provided for each family. About 2,600 families will benefit.


OBU Family Mass

The monthly family mass organized by the Wattala - Ja -ela Branch of St. Joseph's College Old Boys Union will be held on July 17 at 8.30 a.m at the Collage chapel followed by fellowship and breakfast.


Lecture on whales and dolphins

An illustrated lecture on whale and dolphin watching in Sri Lanka by marine biologist Anouk Ilangakoon, will make a presentation on July 21 at 6 pm at the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), 120/10, Vidya Mawatha, off Wijerama Mawatha (BMICH end), Colombo 7. The lecture is held under the auspices of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka.

The lecture is open to the public. Entrance is free.


American International School 'Royal Party'

American International School will hold its Open Day followed by a grand 'Royal Party' today from 3 pm to 6 pm at the School premises, American International School, 285/1, Galvihara Road (Off Hill Street), Dehiwela.

At the Open Day, parents can visit the school by prior appointment and view all facilities available for the education. All activities of the Montessori section will be demonstrated by students and teachers.


B positive kidney needed

A father of two, Ashley Tisseverasinghe, 55, being treated for Enstaged Renal Disease.

He requires a B positive kidney and has been advised for an immediate transplant.

Deadly fall

A 44-year farmer died on the spot after falling from the motorcycle he was riding at Vinayagapuram, Sorkalappu Kulakkattu.
