Friendship Bridge between North and South

Students of the Southern part of the country have commenced
stretching cooperative hands towards those in the North and East in a
major friendship-building exercise. Thus, friendship and cordiality
between the young of the North and South will get an opportunity to
bloom, after 30 years.
The students of Swarnajayanthi Maha Vidyalaya in Kegalle paid a
goodwill visit to St Joseph’s College in Mathagal, Jaffna, and conducted
a cultural show together while staying there for two days.

An officer of the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna, told the
Daily News that the students of St. Joseph’s College, Mathagal had a
memorable day in their school’s history with their counterparts of
Swarnajayanthi Maha Vidyalaya Kegalle.
He added that it was a clear sign that the students had built up
strong links between them thereby restricting the opportunities for
friction.
He also said that having identified needs of their fellow students at
Mathagal the boys and girls from Kegalle guided by their teachers,
donated a stock of school items and sportsware to St. Joseph’s College.
He added that a special function was held in this regard at the school’s
main hall on Monday.
The officer further stated that the teachers and students of
Swarnajayanthi were received with a warm welcome on their arrival at St.
Joseph’s College. An attractive cultural show, during which students of
both schools presented performances specific to their areas, added
colour to the main event of handing over donations.
He said that during informal sessions, the students of both schools
had friendly chats, sang and danced together.
He added that the visit was organized by the 515 Brigade of the
Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SF-J). Accommodation and meals
for teachers and students of Kegalle Swarnajayanthi were arranged by the
515 Brigade.
General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Walgama
participated in the ceremony as the Chief Guest.
Commander 515 Brigade Brig. Buvaneka Randeniya and senior officers of
the SF-J and Education Department of Jaffna and Kegalle also were
present. |
