Padma asana (Lotus posture)
The sanskrit word padma means lotus. The name derives from the manner
in which the legs are folded to resemble lotus petals. This asana holds
a special significance to yoga and meditation. Though rooted in the mud,
the lotus blossom rises above to bloom in the sun.
Although it grows in water the leaves of the lotus remains dry. These
symbols signify the purity of consciousness and the journey of
transformation from ignorance to awakening. This asana had been
practiced by yogis for years.
Benefits of the asana:
* Helps to keep a straight spine.
* Relaxes and helps concentration.
* This is good for brain tissues. It enhances memory power and
creates a natural balance through the mind and body.
* Soothes the nervous system.
* Helps to dissolve excessive fat that builds up in the thighs and
legs as you go grow old. It also strengthens the leg muscles.
* Creates flexibility in the ankles and knees.

Step 1
Place the left foot on the right thigh. Grab the left leg with the
right hand. Now place your left hand on your left knee and move your leg
up and down. Stretch that leg and then place the other leg on the
opposite thigh. Repeat the previous process. This should be done three
times.
Now place the right foot on the left thigh and the left foot on the
right thigh. Begin this process with the leg you are comfortable with
because some people find it easier to bend the left leg first before the
right one while others are comfortable bending the right one first. The
soles should be upwards.
