Showers likely in catchment areas

Catchment areas are likely to experience rainy conditions in the next few days, Meteorology Department deputy director M D Dayananda told the Daily News.

He said that those areas experienced considerable rainfall since last Tuesday.

He noted that Canyon, Kothmale, Laxapana, Maussakele and Norton reservoirs had experienced rainfall ranging between 15mm and 35mm last Wednesday. Intermittent showers were experienced in these areas even yesterday.

However, he observed that there is no sign of heavy rainfall to these areas to fill the reservoirs. Dayananda said that rainfall during the beginning of the South West Monsoon was not up to the expected levels. More rain is expected in the coming months since the monsoon conditions prevail until mid September, he added.

The Western side of the Central hills, Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, Galle and Matara will experience intermittent showers today, he stated.
