Mixed fortunes for Lankans on day one
Sri Lanka experienced mixed fortunes on the opening day of the 19th
Asian Athletic Championships which commenced at the University Memorial
Stadium in Kobe, Japan yesterday.

The best performance probably came from Chandrika Subashini who
qualified to compete in the women’s 400 meters final today.
The 22 year old national record holder clocked 52.97 in the first
heat and then returned a timing of 54.05 seconds in the semifinals.
However the more experienced Prasanna Amarasekera was eliminated from
the men’s 400 meters heats after a disappointing performance where he
returned a time of 46.31 seconds to finish in the fifth position.
Meanwhile star sprinter Shehan Ambepitiya was also knocked out from
the first round of the men’s 100 meters heats after he returned a timing
of 10.61 to finish in the sixth place in the semi finals.
In addition Nadeeka Lakmali had to be content with the fifth place in
the women’s javelin throw event following an effort of 54.91 meters.
Sri Lanka’s other participation at this meet will be the men’s 4x400
metres relay comprising of K. K. Seneviratne, R. B. Karunaratne, I.
M.Pushpakumara and M. G. S. Mudennegedera. |
