Chief priest of Kilinochchi Sri Badrakali Amman Kovil Rasma Paramasivam invoked blessings on Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa to get more strength and confidence to redress the grievances of northern people who lost their freedom due to terrorism. Rajapaksa visited Kilinochchi recently.


Poultry farming encouraged

The Agriculture Department has urged low-income families in the Matale district to take to Poultry Farming with the Economic Development Ministry assistance. Ten chickens will be provided to each family where 2,575 families in the district will benefit.

This programme will cover all Grama Seva divisions in the district.


Woman nabbed with counterfeit note

A woman who had a fake Rs 1,000 note in her possession was taken into custody by Weeraketiya police. The woman had given the fake note to a boutique in Weeraketiya to buy goods.

The boutique owner on suspicion informed the police. The woman was produced before the Walasmulla Magistrate.


Couple injured in m'cycle accident

A couple travelling on a motorcycle was injured and admitted to the Badulla hospital following an accident involving a three wheeler and the motorcycle along the Mahiyangana-Bibila road. The three wheeler driver was taken into Police custody. Badulla Police are investigating.


CFL bulbs for places of worship

Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) bulbs will be distributed among all religious centres free.

This will be implemented according to a concept of Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.

The first stock of energy saving CFL bulbs was distributed among Atamasthana temples in Anuradhapura at a function attended by Atamasthanadipathi Ven Dr Pallegama Siriniwasa Thera and prelates of all temples.


Religious programmes

A series of programmes under the theme Pilivethin Pelagesemu (follow good practices) have been arranged at Sri Poorvarama, Kirulapone to celebrate the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi under the guidance of Sri Poorvarama Viharadipathi Ven Pathberiye Vimalagnana Nayaka Thera at Sri Abhayarama at Narahenpita and several other temples.

Sambuddhathva Jayanthi Organizing Committee secretary R M Karunaratne said a Mav Piya Sambhavana programme will be conducted by Sabaragamuwa Province Mav Piya Sambhavana Unit president Ven Muttettupita Vimalakitti Thera on July 10 from 8.30 am to 10.30 am at Sri Poorvarama, Kirulapone.

A one-day Bhavana programme will be conducted at the same premises on July 17 from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. It will be conducted by Ven Uduwana Ratanapala Thera of Sunethra Devi International Buddhist Centre, Gangodavila and Dhamma Sobha Meditation Centre Head at Kosgama. A video on meditation will also be shown.


Islamic lectures

A series of public lectures by Shariah Academy, USA, panel lecturer Sheikh Essam Tawfik has been jointly organized by the Serendib Educational Foundation and Moors Islamic Cultural Home.

Today: Khuthba Bayan at Lower Bagatale Masjid, Colombo 3 (subject - Another Ramadan dawns, are we ready to embrace it?), today: public lecture at MICH, 7, Lily Avenue, Colombo 6 at 8 pm (subject - Marital conflicts - who takes the blame?) and July 9 a public lecture at MICH, 7, Lily Avenue, Colombo 6 at 8 pm (subject - The reality of the grave).


Poly clinic

The Sri Lanka Cancer Society will hold their next poly clinic on July 10 from 8.30 am to 11.00 am at 37/25, Bullers Lane, Colombo 7 to screen patients for all types of cancer.

Paps smears testing and dental and general clinic activities will also be conducted. The services are completely free of charge.


Praise and worship service

A praise and worship, healing and deliverance service will be held on July 10 at 10.30 am at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour (adjoining the BMICH) Colombo 7.

The speaker and minister at this service, which is open to all, will be Dr. Vijaya Corea who will speak on 'How to appropriate the glorious rewards of grace.'


Bodhi Prakaraya unveiled

North Western Province Governor Tissa R Balalla unveiled a newly built Bodhi Prakaraya and gilt fence at the Kurunegala Maligawa premises yesterday. The governor offered a special memento to Presidential Adviser Padeniya Raja Maha Viharadhipathi Rekawa Sri Ginarathana Thera in recognition of his "Sasana" service.


Prof Sivathamby no more

Internationally renowned intellectual and Man of Letters Prof Karthigesu Sivathamby has passed away.


Dhamma Serman

The annual Dhamma Serman organized by The Government Services Buddhist Association will be held at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya on Esala Full Moon Poya day (14) at 6.30 am.

It will be based on the Dhammachakka Pawathana Sutta.


Perahera

The Dalada Perahera of Kurunegala will be held today in the Kurunegala Town. Perahera will start from the Ethkanda Raja Maha Viharaya, Kurunegala at 7.30 pm.
