'CMCC makes work efficient'
Chrisni MENDIS
The objective of merging the local municipal councils is to make the
work more efficient, said former UN senior officer S Sejivanatum who is
an officer of town planning in the UK and an architect for the local
towns.
She was addressing a seminar organized by the Women for Good
Governance (WGG) on June 21 at the Organization of Professional
Associations Auditorium to discuss the merging of the local
municipalities and the creation of the Colombo Metropolitan City
Corporation (CMCC) which had been approved in March.
An urban designer for the town within the corporation, Surath
Wickramasinghe said that local authorities are too small.
Thus, combining the councils and forming a large-scale body is more
appropriate and would function better.
According to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, establishing the Colombo
Metropolitan City Corporation will not cause a negative impact on the
local government institutions in the Colombo city and suburban areas.
Electing representatives for these institutions will be carried out
as usual. The proposed Colombo Metropolitan City Corporation will
streamline the development activities in the city areas. |
