Over 3,740 kms of road to be developed

The Economic Development Ministry has launched an islandwide project
of provincial road development aimed at securing an excellent road
network on all rural territories of the country on the directions of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Under the programme, a stretch of over 3,740 kms of road will be
developed and carpeted in all districts with an estimated expenditure of
Rs 22,000 million. The proposed development project activities include
carpeting of roads, improvement of road pavements, bridges, drainage and
replacement of culverts of proposed roads.
As part of the massive project, Economic Development Minister Basil
Rajapaksa on July 4 inaugurated the Provincial Road Development Project
of the Galle district.
Utilizing the funds from the Economic Development Ministry the
project is implemented by the Southern Provincial Council.
Under the Galle District scheme an expanse of 310 km of provincial
roads is to be up-graded and carpeted at a cost of Rs 3,100 million.
Accordingly minister Basil Rajapaksa inaugurated development work of
the Pinnaduwa-Pilana Road in Akmeemana, Unawatuna Eramudugaha Junction-Ginigala
Road in Habaraduwa, and Aluthwala Junction-Kirindiela-Meetiyagoda-Galaboda
Junction Road in Ambalangoda.
Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva, Deputy
Speaker Chandima Weerakkodi, Galle district parliamentarians Dr Ramesh
Pathirana and Nishantha Mutuhettigama and southern provincial ministers
U G D Ariyathilake and Chandima Rasaputra also participated. |
