First Lankan tea taster feted

The first Sri Lankan tea taster and former Tea Board Director Austin Perera will be felicitated at Russels Tea Lounge in Elvitigala, Narahenpita at 4.00 pm on Sunday (10) with the support of Sri Lanka Tea Board. The event is organised by Russels Tea.

Austin Perera

Perera joined the tea industry during the time when the country was a British colony and faced many challenges in the process.

After the initial training period he joined Rye estate in Balangoda and then English and Scottish CWC the second largest tea distributor in the UK at the time.

Then he joined Lipton and later was appointed to the Overseas Service of Sri Lanka Tea Board. He was the first tea commissioner in Pakistan and after three years transferred as Chief Tea Commissioner in UK and Europe and served for 10 years until he was promoted as the Tea Promotion Director where he served for four years and retired. He is now 84 years. RK
