Galle Mayor suspended

Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva yesterday suspended Methsiri de Silva from the post of Galle Mayor.

The Chief Minister making the mayor’s suspension vide special gazette notification 1713/1 of July 4, 2011 has further notified that the decision of suspension had been taken based on the findings and recommendations of a three member committee led by a retired senior judicial officer.

It probed into the corruption and fraud allegations levelled against Silva by a group of councillors of the Galle Municipal Council and a section of the public as well.

By the same gazette notification, the Chief Minister has appointed Deputy Mayor Fausul Niyaz as the Acting Mayor.
