Navy nab gold chain snatchers, heroin dealers

Naval personnel arrested two robbers who tried to escape after snatching a gold chain from a woman in Wellawatte last week. The two suspects were handed over to Wellawatte Police for further investigations.

In a separate incident on the same day, Naval personnel arrested drug peddlers transporting heroin from Dehiwala to Mount Lavinia in a three-wheeler.

The Navy handed over the two suspects, a woman and her son, 446 miligrams of heroin and the three-wheeler to Mount Lavinia Police.

Meanwhile, police officers attached to the Western Province North Crimes Division arrested three members of a robber gang.

They were arrested in Negombo on Friday and police gathered information about several robberies committed by them at Negombo and Kochchikade areas including the snatching of gold chains.

On further interrogation of the suspects police recovered five robbed gold chains, two pieres of gold and a three-wheeler and two motor-cycles used by them to commit these robberies.

The suspects were produced before the Negombo Magistrate and remanded till July 15.

Further investigations are continuing.
