PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

[June 30 2013]

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

[June 24 2013]

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

 

 

Plaque to appreciate President’s work : The progress report of Social Virtues and Children’s Rights Promotive Programme was handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at President’s House Kandy yesterday. Founder of Social Virtues and Children’s Rights Promotive Programme SGM Karunarathna and Pujapitiya Provincial Secretary Daya Menike Sarathchandra presented the progress report together with a CD and book to the President. Later children of the Social Virtues and Children’s Rights Promotive Programme presented a plaque to President Mahinda Rajapaksa in appreciation of the President’s dedication to create a righteous society in a prosperous country. After the placing of the Relics Casket on the ceremonial tusker, the perahera starts from the Maha Devalaya with a colourful pageant of up country, low country and Sabaragamuwa dances. After rituals and other poojas at the Valli Amma Devalaya, the perahera starts again through the inner street passing Sri Abhinavaramaya and concludes at the Maha Devalaya. Defence expenditure down to 3 pc of GDP

The government yesterday said its defence expenditure has dropped to three percent of the Gross Domestic Product. According to Finance and Planning Ministry Secretary Dr P B Jayasundara, the government has managed to reduce the defence expenditure systematically. He was delivering the keynote speech at the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2011, held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel yesterday.

Three member committee to probe petrol import

Payment for 20,000 tons of petrol suspended:

Petroleum Resources Minister Susil Premajayantha suspended payment for the 20,000 tons of petrol, reportedly of low quality. The minister has appointed a three member committee to investigate whether any fraud had taken place in the process of importing petrol. The committee which comprises the ministerial Secretary attached to another ministry, former oil refinery section deputy manager and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Marketing Manager, will submit a comprehensive report over the petrol issue.

MoD lifts foreigners’ pre-travel approval to North

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) lifted the imposed pre-travel approval to the North, exclusively for foreign passport holders with effect from yesterday. According to military liaison officials, foreign passport holders are no longer required to produce a MoD travel approval document at Omanthai entry/exist point- the main travel checking point located in Vavuniya.
