This was stamped with their superb performance when they held to a
one all draw against the Strong Philippines team that was here on
Wednesday for the World Cup 2014 qualifying round game.
It was Chathura Guneratne who paved the way for the Lankan team to
gain the much needed lead during the first session of play.
The Philippinos on ther other side fought back gallantly in the
second half to settle for a draw. Their fight during this session gave
the onlookers some top class soccer which was lacking for a long period
for our local soccer fans.
Philippinos were the pre match favorites but the Lankans fine show
did not allow them to have things on their own.
Though the visitors fought a grim battle Sri Lankans also put up a
great show in the final stages by having more psssesion to worry their
opponents.
This result for the Lankan s is a morale booster for the team left
the island yesterday to play the second leg of this qualifying round
which is scheduled to be played at Philippines National stadium on
Sunday.
