Police bust fake gold jewellery racket

Alawathugoda Police have blown the lid off a large-scale racket involving fake gold jewellery following the interrogation of three suspects arrested during a random check on a three-wheeler at Piriestone in Alawathugoda on Thursday.

Police also seized two gold plated bangles, two rings, a pendant and several bank mortgage receipts from their possession.

On further interrogation, Police found that one of the culprits residing in Nagastenne Road, Kandy, has used his residence to make fake gold jewellery and earned nearly nine million rupees by mortgaging them to private banks in Kegalle and Kurunegala.

Police also recovered 362 mortgage receipts from his house and the equipment used to turn out the fake jewellery.

The three suspects who are residents of Kandy and Thalathuoya, were due to be produced before the Kandy Magistrate yesterday.

Alawathgoda Police are investigating.
