Project to develop northern rural schools

The Education Ministry is conducting a programme to develop rural schools in the North with the assistance of the Defence Ministry, Education Ministry sources said.

Under this programme resources of schools in the most remote areas in Jaffna are being developed. The Education Ministry will also fulfil demands in human resources.

Under the first phase of the project, measures have been taken to improve building facilities in Mahajana College in Thellippalai. A three- storeyed building is being constructed at a cost of Rs 25 million.

Apart from classrooms, a library and a laboratory will be established in the new building. After completing the first phase, several other schools will also be developed.

Security forces personnel are assisting this programme under the supervision of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The aim of the project is to establish a better educational environment in the schools in the North.

All facilities will be provided to selected schools for students to engage in educational activities without any hindrance, an Education Ministry official said.
