Programmes to mark People’s Bank Golden Jubilee

July 1 marks 50th anniversary of the People’s Bank. The Bank has organized several activities centred on its branch network throughout the country. The Golden Jubilee celebrations will be held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees.

The People’s Bank Golden Jubilee commemorative stamp and first day cover, the commemorative coin and a special anniversary commemorative volume will be issued at the ceremony.

The theme of the commemorative stamp is the service rendered by the People’s Bank to strengthen the nation’s economy by improving the lives of the micro, small and medium entrepreneurs.

The Rs. 1,000 commemorative coin is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The reverse of the coin depicts the People’s Bank logo and the Lotus petals depicted around the logo symbolizes how Sri Lanka was made prosperous during the past 50 years. The commemorative coin turned out by the Royal Mint Limited of England in 0.925 Sterling Silver with gold plating will be part of the history of the People’s Bank as a memento with several times the face value of the coin.

The management of the Bank has taken steps to issue a special commemorative volume on the historic occasions of the banking history. The important functions of the history of the People’s Bank included in this volume has been compiled by a selected expert panel. It also covers how banking in Sri Lanka had evolved during the past five decades.

Another important programme in the series of the Golden Jubilee celebrations will be the donation of 50 houses constructed for people in the North. The housing project faces the Mannar Road, adjacent to the Madhu shrine. Through this special housing project constructed in collaboration with the Resettlement Authority. Fifty Sinhala and Tamil families will be provided houses.

The 560 square ft houses with all basic amenities will have furniture as well. The estimated unit cost of the project is around one million rupees.

The amount estimated for this project including potable water and other infrastructure facilities is Rs 55 million. The total cost of the project is borne by the People’s Bank.

The People’s Bank Head Office Building has been renovated, and the Borella City Branch will be named the Golden Jubilee Building.

The Borella City Branch will be set up in the 12 storey building constructed for the People’s Leasing Limited Head Office. The Golden Jubilee Branch includes ultra modern computer systems.

The corporate website of the People’s Bank will be launched on June 30, with new features and facilities.

The 50th anniversary special issue of the Arthika Wimasuma will also be published on July 1. The magazine has several in-depth and meaningful articles on small scale financial services and the commercial banks and electronic banking, financial problems and examples that can be gleaned through them, the evolution of the Sri Lanka Banking Law and banking services in the aftermath of the north-east conflict and the responsibilities of State banks in Sri Lanka.

A series of religious programmes have also been organized throughout the island. Retired and current staff , organizations and customers of the People’s Bank will take part in these programmes.


Coca-Cola launches Brrr Wenna Swiss Yanna initiative

Propelling the spontaneous Coca-Cola ‘Brrrrr’ Campaign to the next level, Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka launched the Brrr Wenna Swiss Yanna initiative. The exciting summer initiative aims to target consumers across the island and further spread the contagious refreshment of an icy cold Coca-Cola through the infectious ‘Brrrrrr’.

The unique and also one of the biggest consumer promotions in Sri Lanka was announced by Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Country Manager, Patrick Pech, along with Kumar Region Marketing Manager, South West Asia Gaurav Singh. Through this first of its kind initiative, eight lucky consumers will get the opportunity to win an all expense paid couple trip to Switzerland and feel the ‘Brrrrr’ like never before. Inaddition, over 160,000 consumers will get a chance to win prizes worth Rs 3.8 million and over 100,000 free bottles of Coca-Cola.

Our latest Brrr Wenna Swiss Yanna initiative is a testament of this effort. Through this unique initiative we are giving our consumers the perfect opportunity to experience the infectious ‘Brrr’ by consuming icy cold soft drinks in a perfect setting like Switzerland. Additionally, consumers will also get a chance to win cash prizes worth Rs 3.8 million and over 100,000 free bottles of Coca-Cola.

This initiative is an extension of the earlier launched ‘Brrrr’ campaign through which we aim to magnify the connect of Coca-Cola with the consumers. After winning the SLIM Awards for Most Popular Beverage Brand of the Year and Most Popular Youth Beverage Brand of the Year we look forward to organizing such exciting initiatives in the future and refreshing our loyal consumers with the unparalleled magic of Coca-Cola”.

To participate in this exciting initiative, consumers just need to purchase a bottle of Coca-Cola, Fanta Orange, Fanta Portello, Fanta Cream Soda or Sprite with special green coloured promotional crowns and look for a prize or a nine digit unique code under the bottle’s crown.

The consumers then need to redeem the prize from the shopkeeper or SMS ‘Brrr’ followed by the nine digit unique code to 2580 from their mobile phones to win a full expense paid couple trip to Switzerland. The winners will be chosen through a computer generated lucky draw. This initiative is applicable on 175 ml, 300 ml and 500 ml returnable glass bottles


AAI protecting future professionals

The Sports Club of Asian Alliance Insurance together with the staff members of the company organized a project with the objective of uplifting the standards of two deserving schools in Kalutara and Kurunegala Districts recently.

Initiated under the unique CSR umbrella of Asian Alliance Insurance Sports Club, Palapitiyagoda Kusalagnana Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kalutara and Kuda Kowana Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kurunegala were selected for this project. Funds and provisions were collected from the employees of AAI by the AAI Sports Club. The enthusiastic efforts of the staff paid off as the collections exceeded the targeted budget.

The inaugural project under this unique CSR initiative was carried out at Palapitiyagoda Kusalagnana Kanishta Vidyalaya’; over 75 staff members from the AAI Head Office as well as members of the Panadura, Kalutara and Horana Regional Distribution Offices participated at this inaugural event.


Kelaniya University Medical Faculty deploys Arpico “Green Gas” Unit

The Medical Faculty of the Kelaniya University based in Ragama recently set up an Arpico Green Gas Unit at the faculty premises. Arpico Plastishells Ltd, paving the way in organic and liquid waste management, introduced the island’s first Green Gas Unit providing households, hotels, restaurants, manufacturing plants, large scale businesses and SMEs to produce bio gas through organic waste.

The Arpico Green Gas Unit was installed based on the theme “Healthy Environment - Healthier Sri Lanka” an exhibition organized by the Medical Faculty Ragama under the patronage of Prof. Rajitha Wickramasinghe Dean and Professor of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, Kelaniya University. Furthermore the new Green Gas Unit Burner initiated the traditional milk boiling ceremony creating a new chapter for a greener Sri Lanka.

Available in 1000 ltrs and 5000 ltrs units, it is estimated a total 1-7 hrs of gas could be generated and stored with minimum effort in these new “Green Gas Units” producing vistas for renewable energy for all citizens in the country. Liquid waste should be stored to produce the Green Gas, and users would additionally benefit from the liquid compost, which can be used for agricultural and gardening purposes.
