The Ministry has formulated programmes, such as, leadership training
workshops to help produce intellectuals with tranquility of mind and
physical fitness for the benefit of the country. Although parents
incurred a heavy expenditure to educate their children upto the GCE
Advanced level, a small minority gain entrance to universities. There
were reports of certain male students in universities getting addicted
to drugs. Such tendencies could be eliminated by getting them to do
sports and other social activities in addition to education.
Minister Dissanayake said the quality of state universities will not
deteriorate by setting up private universities. “Our intention is to
attract 10 percent foreign students to local universities.” To achieve
this objective, we have to upgrade universities according to a plan,
providing them with facilities.
The minister said Sri Lanka has all the natural resources needed for
its development. Attainment of development would not be difficult if the
contribution of university students is reflected through inventions and
problem solving decisions.
