Miyangamkulam tank renovation work begins today

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa will inaugurate the
renovation work of Miyangamkulam tank in the Batticloa district today
costing Rs 75 million. Over 4,500 acres of paddy lands would be brought
under plough after the renovation of this tank.
The project is carried out by the Economic Development Ministry
jointly with the Agrarian Services and Wildlife Ministry under the
government’s programme to renovate 2,000 dilapidated tanks in the
country.
Irrigation tanks which need renovation and tanks which were affected
by the recent floods have been earmarked for renovation by the ministry
and the government has allocated Rs 2,960 million for the project.
According to Economic Development Ministry officials, construction on
233 tanks in the country has already been commenced and plans are
underway to begin construction of all tanks within next few years.
