CEA raids to nab polythene producers

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has launched a special programme to raid establishments which produce, use or sell polythene less than 20 microns in thickness.

CEA chairman Charitha Herath noted that special islandwide raids would be carried out to nab the offenders.

He requested public support to help nab the producers and sellers of polythene less than 20 microns by informing on Tel. No. 2888999. CEA Southern Province office has taken legal action against 10 people who were found guilty of producing, using or selling polythene less than 20 microns in thickness.

The Galle and Matara magistrates courts have imposed a fine of Rs 5000 each against these individuals. A CEA spokesman said that about 600 raids have been conducted within last three years to nab the offenders.

Polythene less than 20 microns has been banned in the country since 2007.
