Tribute to Clarence in Melbourne
The popularity of the songs by Clarence Wijewardena will always be
fresh, despite the passage of time. And now in Melbourne a special
tribute to Clarence will be held on June 26 at the Renaissance Theatre,
Kew High School by Daya Silva and his Clan.
Clarence in the 80’s |
Daya Silva commenced his musical career in the late 60s and formed
his first band Tharanga in 1968 in Sri Lanka. Subsequently, when he left
for Australia he formed the band Dinkum Lankans in 1980. An ardent fan
of Clarence Wijewardena, his repertoire was basically a Clarence
repertoire.
In 1989, Clarence accepted an invitation from Daya and performed to a
capacity packed audience at Springoale Town Hall, Melbourne, accompanied
by the Dinkum Lankans.
On June 26, Daya and the Clan will feature guest artiste Ranil
Mallawarachchi performing songs of Clarence.
Daya and the Clan comprises musicians domiciled in Australia - Raj
Dassanayake on drums, Ravi on lead guitar, Tilak Jinadasa on rhythm
guitar and vocals, Shyan Fernando on bass guitar, Manoj Mendis on
keyboards and Shaman Fernando on bongo drums. |
