President receives annual report

MP Namal Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest at a ceremony in
Vavuniya to reunite ex-LTTE combatants with their families
after undergoing nearly two years of vocational training.
This ceremony saw the largest number of rehabilitated ex-LTTE
combatants being reintegrated into civilian life. Youth
Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma,
Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri
Gajadeera and several others also attended. |
Abans Ltd to co-sponsor ANCL Aloka Pooja
The ANCL (Lake House) Mihintale Aloka Pooja will be held on a grand
scale with the co-sponsorship of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and
Abans Ltd on June 14,15 and 16.
The Mihintale Aloka Pooja will be held under the guidance of
Mihintale Raja Maha Vihara Chief Incumbent Most Ven Namalwewe Sri
Rathanajothi Thera.
Exposition of Sacred Relics
The public can venerate the Shoulder Relic of Gautama Buddha at the
Gangarama Temple, Hunupitiya, Colombo 2 from June 10-12 from 6.30 am to
10 pm.
An opportunity will also be given to worship the Hair Relic presented
to President Mahinda Rajapaksa during these three days.
Woman dies in accident

A woman succumbed to her injuries at the Colombo North General
Hospital, Ragama on Wednesday. She was knocked down by a van at
Ihala-Karagahamuna, Kadawatha on the Kadawatha-Ganemulla road. The woman
was identified as A W P Pearl Indraratne (85) of Ihala-Karagahamuna,
Kadawata.
Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Ragama M Priyankara Lal held the inquest
and recorded a verdict of accidental death due to shock and haemorrhage
following injuries.
Kadawatha Police led evidence.
Body found

Kiribathgoda Police has recovered a body of a person near the
Kiribathgoda Central Bus Stand on Tuesday morning. He was identified as
a resident of Gonawala, Pamunuwila.
Kiribathgoda police are investigating.
Student abducted

A 16-year student was abducted by three youngmen in a three-wheeler.
The student was awaiting a bus at Dambulla bus stand to attend a tuition
class.
He had been taken to the Kandalama area and forced to drink arrack
and assaulted. He had been taken back to Dambulla and left in a shrub
near the bus stand.
The student was admitted to Dambulla base hospital in an unconscious
state. Dambulla police are investigating.
English Language course
An English langauge course will be commenced for the Hambantota
district youth at the youth training centre at Yayawatta in Tangalle.
The unemployed youth above 16 years can apply for the course.
Applicants must send their applications to the officer-in-charge,
National Youth Services Council District Youth Training Centre,
Yayawatta, Tangalle before June 18.
More B onion seeds

The Central Provincial Agriculture Department will promote big onion
seed production in the Matale district. Agriculture officials said that
the annual requirement of big onion seeds of the district is 18,000
kilograms. It can be fulfilled by 2013. The big onion seed production is
expected to be 10,000 kilograms this year. About 1,000 farmers have been
deployed for the big onion cultivation.
Van-bus collision

A van, plying on the Dambulla-Kurunegala main road, crashed on to a
private bus at the Galewela town injuring six persons seriously
including three women. The injured were transferred to Kurunegala and
Colombo hospitals.
The injured were returning from Anuradhapura having participated in a
religious ceremony. They were residents of Galewela.
UGC members to be increased to 15
The government is planing to increase the University Grant Commission
(UGC) members from the present seven to 15.
The government announced yesterday that the proposal by Higher
Education Minister S B Dissasnayake to increase the number of UGC
members from the present seven to 15 was approved by the Cabinet.
The Cabinet has also decided to increase the number of members of the
University Senate which is the Executive Board and the Board of Control
of the Universities.
CEB chiefs assume duties
Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman Prof Wimaladarma Abeywickrama
and the Board of directors assumed duties yesterday.
CEB General Manager Nihal Wickremasuriya also assumed duties
yesterday.
Sri Lanka elected to ILO governing body
Sri Lanka has been elected as a Deputy Member of the International
Labour Organisation's (ILO) Governing Body. The election took place on
Monday during the 100th International Labour Conference (ILC) which is
currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland.
The ILO governing body includes 56 regular and 66 deputy members
representing the three groups that make up the ILO's membership,
governments, employers and workers.
Elections for the membership of the Governing Body are held every
three years.
The ILC is taking place from June 1 to 17.
Donations needed for Viharaya
Dehiwala Sri Sudarshana Dharma Nikethana Viharaya Chief Incumbent Ven
Lelwala Samitha Thera appealed to philanthropists for donations to the
Viharaya.
The Viharaya has received Rs 1.5 million as donations upto now while
devotees in various countries have informed that they would donate about
Rs one million to purchase the seven perch land adjoining the Viharaya
premises.
Donations could be made to Sri Sudharshana Dharma Nikethanaya,
Sudharshana Road, Hill Street, Dehiwela A/c No 101760777679, Sampath
Bank, Dehiwela.
Pirith at BoC
An all night Pirith chanting will be held at the Bank of Ceylon
Metropolitan Branch, York Street today to mark the 2600th Sri
Sambuddhathva Jayanthi and the 50th anniversary of Metropolitan Branch,
Bank of Ceylon.
An alms giving for 15 Buddhist monks will also be held the following
morning at the Metropolitan bank premises.
Assistant General Manager (Metropolitan) Y A M M Karunadharma and
Eksath Bauddha Sangamaya are organizing this ceremony.
Kathak dance evening
An evening of Kathak dance by Sadara Supathum Peiris, Anjalee
Wijesiriwardena, Rangana Nawagamuwa and Loshitha Samaraweera organized
by the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo will be held today at 6 pm at the
Indian Cultural Centre, 16/2, Gregory's Road, Colombo 7.
Sadara, Anjalee and Rangana completed their Bachelor of Dance at the
Indira Kala Sangeet Vishva Vidyalaya, India and Loshitha Samaraweera is
a disciple of Anushka Ekanayake.
Screening of film, talk
The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo has organized a film screening
entitled Naalu Pennungala (Malayalam with subtitles in English) of Padma
Vibhushan Adoor followed by a talk by the director tomorrow at 6 pm at
the ICC Auditorium.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan hails from Kerala, South India and is one of the
most renowned filmmakers of India. Adoor was honoured with the British
Film Institute Award, The Commander of the Order of arts and Letters' of
the French government, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award and recently the
Padma Vibushan, one of the highest civilian honours in India. He has
made 11 films and also written three books on films.
Blood and eye donation
A blood and eye donation camp organized by Udaya Enterprises,
Karagampitiya (near Dehiwala Police Station) will be held on June 15
from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. for the 17th consecutive year.
Arangetram tomorrow
Selvi Randika Nagaratnam's Bharathanatya Arangetram will be held
tomorrow at Ramakrishna Mission Hall, Wellawatte.
Randika is a student of Suryakala Chandrika Jeevanathan, director of
Shriram Shrishti School of Dance.
The guests of honour will be Hindu Ladies' College, Colombo Principal
and Past District Governor for Toastmasters International District 82
Balraj Arunasalam.
On the sidelines of the fourth UN Conference on the Least
Developed Countries (LDCs) which was held in Istanbul in
May, Deputy Minister Neomal Perera held bilateral
discussions with Undersecretary, Foreign Affairs Ministry in
Turkey Feridun H Sinirlioglu. Undersecretary Sinirlioglu
stated that his government looks forward to working closely
with Sri Lanka on bilateral issues. |
