Northern students visit President
Students from the North who followed the Sinhalese language course conducted by the Centre for Peace Building under the auspices of the Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration, along with their teachers paid a visit to Temple Trees and were warmly welcomed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday. The students, who were from St Thomas Balika Vidyalaya, Point Pedro made short speeches, sang songs and expressed gratitude to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, specially for bringing peace for them. Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of National Languages and Social Integration Vasudeva Nanayakkara, teachers and staff of the NILET program and other government officials were present at the function. School gets computers

A programme has been expedited to teach computer education in Maligaikadu Al Hussain Vidyalaya in Kalmuni Education Zone by the School Development Society.


Goda seized Priyadarshani Kahawala Ingiriya Central group

A large stock of goda in barrels and distilling equipment were seized during a raid on an illegal distillery in Kottiyawatta, Bambaraliya reservation by Ingiriya Police recently.

However, the suspect had fled from the scene and escaped arrest during the raid.

Police are conducting further inquiries to arrest the king pin behind the racket.


Blood donation programme

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry planned a number of religious programmes to mark the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi under the patronage of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Rajitha Senaratne. Ceylon Fisheries Corporation (CFC) also conducted a blood donation programme organized by CFC Chairman Maheel Senaratne. It was held at the CFC premises where a large number of officials and volunteers participated.


Al-Nakba exhibition

The Embassy of the State of Palestine and the Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine will hold a photo exhibition and screening of a documentary film to mark the 63rd anniversary of Al-Nakba (The Palestine Refugees Catastrophe), tomorrow at the National Film Corporation Auditorium at 303, Bauddhaloka Mawatha at 6.30 pm.


One killed

A pedestrian succumbed to his injuries after being knocked down by a jeep plying on the Haputale – Welimada road on Tuesday. The deceased had been identified as M.M. Rajapakase (40) of Haputale.


School gets computers

Under this programme, many students have been provided with computers. Steps have also been taken by the School Development Society to set up a computer learning centre in the school.


Katunayake FTZ closed

Government has decided to close the Katunayake Free Trade Zone today to establish industrial peace.


Meeting

A special meeting at the Alumni Association of the Peradeniya University (Wayamba Chapter) will be held on June 4 at 2.00 pm at Bluesky Hotel in Kurunegala.

At this meeting Dr Vijitha Perera of the Wildlife Conservation Department deliver a lecture on "Elephant Human Conflict" in Sri Lanka.


Death of ANCL staffer's wife

The death occurred of E. Chrishanthy Priyangika Silva of No. 112, Jayasumanarama Road, Ratmalana.

She is the wife of Damith Soysa of the Lake House Rotary Printing Department.

Funeral takes place at the Gonakovila Public Cemetery on June 1 at 4 p.m.
