Inland fisheries to be doubled by 2013

"Arrangements have been made to provide computer technology, modern
fishing vessels and gear to all fisheries associations. We hope to
double inland fisheries by 2013," said Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
Development Minister Rajitha Senaratne.
The minister was addressing the fishing equipment distribution
ceremony at the Ampara district aquaculture project office recently.
The ministry will develop inland fishery industry to uplift
livelihoods. Inland fishery industry is one of the main parts of the
fisheries industry which will earn more income in the future, he said.
"We have banned all illegal fishing vessels and gear such as trolling
system, dynamite and lightcose lyla nets in both sea and inland
fisheries industries," the minister said.
There is high demand internationally for inland fish resources. The
Fisheries Ministry will take immediate measures to meet demands.
Minister Senaratne made an official visit to Ampara, Iginiyagala and
Namal Oya areas to inspect the work of the fisheries associations in
those areas. The ministry donated 20 fiberglass canoes worth Rs
7,40,000,300, net sets worth Rs 5,25,000 and six computers worth Rs
7,68,000 to the six fishery associations in Ampara district under the
instructions of National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA).
Ampara district MPs Shriyani Wijewickrama and Faisal Kaseep,Public
Relations officer Premasiri Perera,NAQDA Chairman Jayantha Chandrasoma,
Ampara district Aquaculture Project Director Rohitha Fernando and a
large number of ministry officials participated in this ceremony. |
