FTZ workers exempted from private pension scheme

The government yesterday decided to exempt Free Trade Zone (FTZ) employees from the proposed private sector pension scheme.

Labour and Labour Relations Minister Gamini Lokuge said the government has decided to implement the private sector pension scheme in a manner that would not impact on employees attached to Free Trade Zone factories.

This new pension scheme introduced by the government will entitle nearly six million private sector employees for pension benefits.

The government has decided to consider the requests made by FTZ employees and exempted them because the government's intention was to introduce the scheme after considering public ideas and views too.
