Baithulmal Fund helps flood victims in Kinniya
The Ceylon Baithulmal Fund has assisted victims of the recent floods
in the Kinniya area, which was one of the worst hit areas with over
10,000 people being affected. Many householders had lost their
agricultural livestock and fishing resources which were their only
source of income, while most families have lost their entire livelihood
and were desperately in need of help.
The Baithulmal Fund had addressed the long-term needs of some of the
victims by providing the needed resources, to assist them generate a
regular income and support their families. Fishing boats with equipment,
goats and sewing machines too were distributed to many families with
school books, including school bags also being presented to 650
students, the total assistance amounting to nearly Rs 4.6 million.
The Ceylon Baithumal Fund which had been established in 1957,
supports the needy with emergency relief, medical aid, education and
shelter. It also assists the poor with sustainable livelihood programmes
to make them self-sufficient. |
