Remembering War Heroes: Thousands of service personnel who laid their lives for unity and the territorial integrity of the motherland were honoured at a simple ceremony held at the War Heroes Memorial near the Parliament complex yesterday. President Mahinda Rajapaksa placed floral tributes to the War Heroes Memorial followed by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne and others. “Having wiped out the world’s most ruthless terror organization and having preserved the unity and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka, we are now in a position to proudly hoist the national flag. What we are commemorating today is the ability of the Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and other communities to live in unity in our land and the occasion of freeing tens of thousands of Northern citizens who were held hostage by the LTTE terrorists,” President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

The family of a Sri Lankan maid, who was murdered by a Saudi sponsor’s wife, received Rs 1.2 million as compensation, the Sri Lankan Embassy announced in Riyadh yesterday.
