The Water Supply and Drainage Ministry has taken steps to construct
the Viharapalugama Water Supply project to supply purified water to
traditional villages from the Anuradhapura era to honour their services
to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
The construction project commenced on May 21 under the patronage of
Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardan and on a concept of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
These villages are located in Central Anuradhapura and
Nuwaragampalatha. Around 4,000 individuals of 770 families will be
provided with clean water and sanitary facilities under this project
which will cost Rs 364 million.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony Minister Dinesh Gunawardana said
that it is a great service to provide water to such individuals who were
dedicated to provide their services to the Sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
which can be considered as the living Buddha.
